SmartWay Trailer

Great Dane, as a key partner of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay Transport Partnership, has helped develop performance specifications for new and existing trailers that achieve greater fuel efficiency. Now, customers committed to measuring and improving the efficiency of their freight operations can adopt a range of trailer systems and components that can help to significantly lower emissions and reduce fuel consumption. Options in the EPA-Certified SmartWay Trailer Spec are available on 53-foot or longer dry freight vans.

Alliance Premium Auxiliary Power Unit
Alliance Parts, the private label brand of Freightliner LLC, has introduced the 2007 Alliance Premium Auxiliary Power Unit (APU).The Alliance Premium APU reduces pollution and complies with anti-idling laws while providing 12,000 BTUs of air conditioning, 10,000 BTUs of heating and 3,300 watts of 110 volt electricity to ensure driver comfort. Its one-cylinder engine, the only one in the industry, burns just one-tenth of a gallon of fuel an hour, saving drivers money on fuel.
The Alliance Premium APU also offers design advantages by using a free-standing system that operates independently of the factory OEM HVAC system.

Battery-Powered Air Conditioning
Dometic Environmental Corporation has developed a new battery-powered auxiliary air conditioning system, designed specifically for day cabs, in response to growing demand for cost-effective solutions to reduce idling while waiting to load and unload at terminals. The Dometic air conditioning system consists of a compressor/evaporator/blower unit that fits between the seats, and a ruggedized external condensing unit that mounts on the back of the cab or under the truck.

ComfortGuard APU
Cummins Inc. has doubled the oil change interval from 500 hours to 1,000 hours for its ComfortGuard Auxiliary Power Unit (APU), which will improve uptime for truck and fleet owners while cutting maintenance costs in half. The recommendation comes after extensive testing in conjunction with the engine supplier, Kubota, to ensure there was no degradation in performance or longevity.

Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner
The SPX Diesel Particulate Filter Cleaner (DPF) was designed with shop service in mind. The patented cleaning process allows the DPF to be cleaned as part of a general maintenance schedule at the service location with minimal time away from the vehicle. It's portability allows the unit to be placed as close to the vehicle as possible and to be stored wherever needed in the service facility.

Flex-Box Smart Kit™
Flex Fuel U.S. ®, a leading pioneer in ethanol conversion systems, has developed the Flex-Box Smart Kit™, a first-of-its-kind after-market bolt on fuel conversion system. The system is the first and only E85 conversion unit has been certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for fleet vehicles, and allows fleet operators and drivers to fill up on E85 (a blend of 85 percent ethanol and 15 percent gasoline) E20, E10 or pure gasoline.

Fuel Filters
Using stored or suspicious fuel in construction and grounds maintenance equipment can be dangerous. Fleet maintenance managers know that operating on contaminated fuel can compromise efficiency and lead to costly breakdowns, but now they can protect their engines. The heavy-duty Mr. Funnel Fuel Filter removes water, dirt and debris to ensure proper operation, improve performance and increase longevity.

IP1012 AL Inverter/Charger
The Xantrex IP1012 AL Inverter/Charger is a safe, clean, quiet alternative to operating a generator or idling an engine to provide power. Ideal for commercial vehicle applications, the rugged, weatherproof Xantrex IP1012 AL Inverter/Charger converts 12-volt DC battery power into 1000 watts of standard 120-volt AC household power. The Xantrex IP1012 AL Inverter/Charger allows the user to operate a small air conditioner, electronics, lighting and tools, from any dual-purpose battery bank.

Jiffy Lube (R) Fleet Card
Jiffy Lube launched the new Jiffy Lube® Fleet Card, which offers fleet customers a more convenient solution to ensure their drivers get in, out, and on their way during their Jiffy Lube® preventive maintenance experience. The Jiffy Lube® Fleet Card addresses Fleet Managers' need for an easy-to-use, expense management tool that simplifies vehicle maintenance management.

Kohler 7APU
Kohler Power Systems brings its second auxiliary power unit (APU) product to the market with its 7APU generator and climate control package. The KOHLER 7APU is one of the highest powered APUs on the market today, and features a stand-alone design that doesn’t require intrusion into the truck’s other systems when being installed. It provides 120-volts of AC and 45-Amps of DC power, enough to run heating and cooling, charge the truck’s battery, and run a variety of electronic equipment such as TVs, microwaves and a block heater. This side-rail mounted APU provides 6.5kW output, weighs less than 540 pounds and measures at 26-in. W x 29-in. H x 24-in. D (from frame rail).

MP7 and MP8 Engines
MACK® MP7 and MP8 engines have been certified to meet California's 2008 criteria to limit emissions of nitrogen oxides (NOx) while idling. This means Mack customers with compliant engines will not have to shut down their engines after five minutes of idling as otherwise required by California regulations which took effect earlier this year. The California Air Resources Board requires trucks to stop idling after no more than five minutes, under most circumstances.

N.I.T.E. System
The NITE system (No Idle Thermal Environment) is a battery operated 12vdc air conditioner with an optional fuel fired heater. The system mounts under the bunk in the sleeper and uses either our NITE duct work or in some model trucks the NITE system can use the factory ducting. The NITE system can save 3700 gallons of fuel per year*. This represents a very quick return on investment. The NITE ac system is powered by four absorbed glass mat, deep cycle batteries.

Natural Gas-fueled Set-Back 113 Tractor
Sterling Truck Corporation has rolled out a new natural gas (NG)-fueled tractor. The Sterling® Set-Back 113 fueled with Natural Gas is ideal for port operations, as well as natural gas utilities and municipalities. An OEM factory-built product, this truck is powered by the Cummins Westport ISL G. Natural gas technology can save an estimated $6,000 in annual fuel and operating costs per truck. Customers in states such as California will also benefit from tax incentives for alternative fuel vehicles. Fuel providers take advantage of these incentives, too, which means that accessibility to NG fuel is on the rise.

Proheat Air Heaters
Teleflex Power Systems, a division of Teleflex Incorporated (NYSE: TFX), announces the launch of a new line of advanced auxiliary cab heaters for heavy-duty trucks in time for the coming winter season. Proheat Air Heaters help truck drivers and fleets significantly reduce engine idling fuel consumption while helping comply with anti-idling regulations. Proheat Air is a diesel-powered air heater that supplies heat for in-cab driver comfort during cold weather.

Run-Rite Diesel Service
The RUN-RITE DIESEL service can help improve fuel economy, reduce emissions and smoke, and clean diesel injectors, pumps and pistons. Low-Sulfur formula, LOW VOC Compliant and Bio-Diesel compatible. 2 and 3 step configurations. Each kit contains Run-Rite Premium Diesel Fuel Treatment. Additionally, each kit contains: Run-Rite R.I.D. Rapid Induction Cleaner and/or B.E.S.T. Oil System Treatment.

SmartWay Tractor
Volvo Trucks North America has partnered with the Environmental Protection Agency to develop a comprehensive package of vehicle components for the Volvo VN to deliver high fuel efficiency and low emissions, as part of EPA’s new SmartWay™ tractor program. Trucks ordered with this set of components are eligible to receive EPA’s SmartWay Tractor designation. The required components will be specially identified in Volvo’s truck ordering system so that carriers participating in the SmartWay program can ensure their new trucks qualify for EPA’s public designation.

SmartWay Tractor
Peterbilt’s two most aerodynamic trucks, the Models 387 and 386, have been recognized as fuel efficient and environment friendly by the Environmental Protection Agency’s SmartWay program, which establishes a comprehensive set of fuel-saving, low-emission equipment specifications for new Class 8 long-haul tractors and trailers. Peterbilt’s SmartWay compliant vehicles offer customers fuel savings of between 10 and 20 percent, lower greenhouse gas emissions, and significantly reduced NOx, particulate matter and other air pollutants.

SmartWay Tractor
Kenworth Truck Company’s environmental-friendly and “green” commitment to producing aerodynamic, fuel-efficient trucks has helped reduce emissions, fuel usage and customer operating costs since it introduced the industry’s first truly aerodynamic truck, the T600A, in 1985. Building on this aerodynamic heritage, Kenworth’s latest models – the new T660 and T2000 – were recently acknowledged as SmartWay™ eligible trucks by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

SmartWay Tractor
International® LoneStar®, introduced in February as the first fuel-efficient "Advanced Classic" big-rig truck, has been certified by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency as a SmartWay truck.
LoneStar joins the International® ProStar®, the most fuel efficient Class 8 truck on the market, with this environmental designation. LoneStar is the first classic-styled Class 8 truck to receive this honor.
The SmartWay program is a voluntary partnership between freight industry sectors and the EPA which establishes recognition and incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and reductions to greenhouse gas emissions. Eligibility for the SmartWay truck certification is based on a comprehensive set of fuel-saving, low-emission equipment specifications for new Class 8 long-haul tractors.

SmartWay Tractor
Freightliner Trucks announced that the Cascadia™ has been designated as SmartWay®-certified by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Cascadia marks the third Freightliner Class 8 truck – along with the Columbia® and Century Class® S/T – to earn this certification. SmartWay is a voluntary program for the transportation industry that establishes incentives for fuel efficiency improvements and greenhouse gas emissions reductions. Trucks that earn the SmartWay designation can be 10 to 20 percent more fuel efficient and up to 90 percent cleaner than comparable models.

SmartWay Tractor
As part of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's SmartWay® Transport Partnership, Mack now offers a select set of components for Pinnacle Axle Back Sleepers that are proven to reduce fuel consumption and lower emissions of greenhouse gases. Pinnacle tractors built with these components meet the EPA's environmental standards for excellence and can be designated as certified SmartWay tractors. Customers can now order the Pinnacle Axle Back with the comprehensive set of fuel saving aerodynamic enhancements and other components to meet the requirements of the U.S. EPA's SmartWay program.

SmartWay Trailer
Wabash National Corporation has announced that its DuraPlate® dry van trailer meets the technical specifications for the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) SmartWay® certification mark. Wabash National's SmartWay certified DuraPlate trailer offers superior aerodynamic combinations for maximum customer benefit. Wabash National, in collaboration with Freightliner LLC, completed extensive road testing of several aerodynamic devices using the American Trucking Associations (ATA) Technology and Maintenance Council (TMC) Fuel Consumption Procedure, before selecting the most beneficial combinations.

SmartWay Trailer
Hyundai Translead, a leading manufacturer of dry and refrigerated van trailers, domestic containers, container chassis, and converter dollies, has announced its acceptance into the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) SmartWay Transport Partnership Program as a producer of an EPA SmartWay Certified dry freight van trailer. Hyundai Translead can now produce the HT Original dry van trailer to EPA SmartWay specifications for customers wishing to reduce their carbon footprint and save fuel.

TrailerTail (R)
ATDynamics, Inc. announces the commercial launch of the TrailerTail®, an aerodynamic device proven to increase fuel efficiency of long-haul tractor-trailers by greater than 5 percent. Based on average long-haul mileage, the technology can deliver more than a billion dollars in fuel savings annually to the North American trucking industry. The TrailerTail® is mounted to the rear of a tractor-trailer, and in less than eight seconds collapses from four feet to a few inches in length to enable normal trailer door operation.
