The sparse maintenance crew is busy getting older lease trucks ready to leave the fleet, and prepping 13 new leased Peterbilts.

"I have put together a team of five shop staff coordinators," he explains. "We're not out there just trying to recruit people, we're also trying to make sure we're keeping them long-term."

According to Reed, the company spends a million dollars annually on technician recruiting, training and retention efforts. "We train over 700 to 1,000 technicians a year," he says, "If you're going to be in the business, it's a big commitment."

"We do assessments to determine what the technicians' skills and interests are, and a number of our technicians move on along a vertical path in the technician field, but can also become shop managers, can become specialists, can go into training, or our TA University," says Liutkes. "Some have even risen through the ranks to become site managers."

"Everybody's fighting for that person to come stay with them," says Reed. "Our company has invested the time and the money and the resouces to make sure that they see a good career opportunity with us."
